Freeze Dried Fun

Hai! I am Bater, or Icky Kitty which is the silly nickname that the dog gave me. I have taken over the blog today. Lily is off at the vet to get a bath. HAHAHAHA They need to clean themselves like me. I only have have to see the vet to get stabs and teeth cleanings. I got to pick out something to try out this month, because I am always left out. I do not like wet food and the only toys I like are hair ties and my cat nip pouches from Three Dog Bakery.

I saw that they had some freeze dried food from Stella and Chewy’s. I saw Lily enjoying the food toppers  she got from them and decided I needed to check them out as well. I am a very picky eater. I have been known to go on a food strike if I decide that my current food is no longer up to my standards. I will pretty much demand a new food. I am a cat, it is just what we do. Keeping those humans on their toes.

I got to try out Duck Duck Goose. Can you guess what protein they use? Duck and turkey.  I love turkey and duck. If I get food, I pretty much demand it contains poultry.  They also have Chick Chick Chicken, Tummy Ticklin’ Turkey, Yummy Lickin’ Salmon and Chicken, and Sea-Licious Salmon and Cod. Lots of great flavors to try out!

Who needs a human when you have sharp teeth? I eventually let go and let mom open up the bag and let me take a sniff or two. I thought it smelled very tasty. I am not sure why it took so long to get the food into my bowl. This is a freeze dried food, so you need to add 1/2 cup of cold or warm (not hot) water to 1 cup of food. Wait one minute and then let us starting digging in. You can feed this to us dry, but make sure there is plenty of water available at meal times. I am a dry food kind of guy, so no water was added. With 3 kitties and one pup, we have lots of water bowls filled at all times. So having water available is never an issue.

IMG_3320

The chunks of food are bigger than I am used to, but I did not have any problems eating them. I did not stop eating until I was full. I really liked this food. It was very tasty and a nice break from my normal food.  I gobbled it up on my next meal time. I did attempt to try it once it had water added to it, but I was not impressed. I prefer my food to be dry and have plenty of water near by. When there was just a tiny bit left, mom just put a few pieces on top of my food.

This is the first time I got to try a freeze dried food, which made the humans a little nervous. I am notorious for hating things, so they were not sure how I would react to a different form of food. I surprised them by taking to freeze dried food like a pro. I have had food that had freeze dried bits added, which is super tasty, but just freeze dried bits is a whole different thing.

Long ago,  my human was uneducated about the quality of cat food. I was fed a food that probably would only get 1 or 2 stars on my pet food quality sites. She then started reading and researching and suddenly I was fed a food that did not contain a vegetable as the first ingredient. I am a cat, do you see a tiger stopping by the produce section first or the meat department? We like our meat, we have sharp teeth for a reason.

Stella and Chewy’s  Duck Duck Goose Dinner Morsels contain 98% poultry, nutrient rich organs, and bone. They also make sure we get all the vitamins and minerals we need to keep us happy and healthy. It is grain free, filler free, gluten free. They put in all the good stuff and keep out the bad stuff.

How can you be sure they keep out the bad stuff? They test each batch to make sure it does not contain any bacteria that could make us sick. When you go onto Stella and Chewy’s website, look at the top right corner. There is an area to enter in the lot number that is printed on each bag of food. Once the lot number is found, you can open a PDF file that shows the results of the tests.

So what makes freeze dried raw food better than plain ole crunchy food? Well, you see with regular food, there can be heavy processing of ingredients, so we get less of the good stuff we need to stay healthy, but with freeze-dried, you still get all that goodness. That goodness can make us have less allergies, maintain a healthy weight, have less tummy issues, keep our skin and coat looking pretty (you know that cats like looking pretty at all times), and make sure that we have a good appetite.

I am giving this food four paws up! It is a very high quality food that is super tasty.

Thanks for letting me steal Lily’s blog for the day. She isn’t all that bad. She lets me sleep on her bed sometimes in exchange for not ratting her out for getting on the comfy recliner.

You can check out her instagram and see a video of me!

5 ingredients served 3 different ways

Wow! Is it already June? Seems like this year is flying by. I would prefer it to move straight on to September. I am not a fan of hot weather. I do not like water, so no jumping in pools to keep me cool or have fun swimming in. I am a cool weather kind of pup. It has already been pretty hot here in the Midwest, so I have been staying indoors where the ac is going.  I have always been a fan of indoor fetch, so I get some exercise that way.  I am still on that darn diet, so any exercise is good for me.

This month, we let the stinky kitties choose something to test out. They are working hard on their review, so I went and decided to get mine done first. They are pretty excited to talk about the food they tried, but today is all about me! (like it isn’t about me every single day) I really liked the previous food topper I tried, so I decided to try a different brand out. This month I picked out Honest Kitchen’s Proper Toppers Grain Free Turkey Recipe. It also comes in fish, beef, and chicken.

IMG_3114

Proper Toppers contain 5 whole food dehydrated food ingredients. It also contains vitamins and minerals, so if you choose to feed this as a meal, you can assure that we are getting the nutrients we need. It also can be fed as a treat in addition to being fed as a meal or meal topper. The turkey toppers ingredients include Turkey, apples, pumpkin, blueberries, and chard.  Super yummy super foods that pups love.

These super foods not only have a lot of great vitamins and minerals, but they also have a lot of great health benefits. These super foods help aid in our digestive health, keep our joints happy and healthy, and the antioxidants support our immune system.

Proper toppers contain 90% meat! It also is 100% human grade and made in a USDA inspected facility. Even though it says human grade, it does not mean that humans should be eating this. It is meant to be given to us pups only. Each tablespoon has 44.9 calories. If using as a food topper, then give 2 tablespoons per 20 lbs of body weight. I would get 5 tablespoons.

IMG_3117

It does not contain a measuring device, but my humans have three million sets of measuring spoons and cups, so not a big deal.  5 tablespoons is just about 1/3 cup. We found a chart online that converted tablespoons to cups to make it easier to measure properly. If you do choose to feed this as a complete meal then splash a little warm water on top before serving.

We are just using this as a topper, so 5 tablespoons it is. (more or less, she did not measure the first time)

IMG_3123

I got to test out a few pieces as a treat first, to see what my thoughts were. I thought it was super tasty and wanted more. When it was time for breakfast, I got less than my usual amount to make up for the additional calories that the toppers would bring to the bowl.  I went straight for the toppers and ate all of those first. I then proceeded to walk away. I was hoping for more toppers, but mom nixed that idea. I can’t help that I find something I like and want more of it!

I really liked this food topper. It has a lot of tasty ingredients (no peas!). It contains zero ingredients from China , and because it is human grade, we can feel better that they are making sure we only get the best meat available.  While mom would not feed me this as a meal due to costs, she would give this to me as a meal topper and a treat.

I give this meal topper 4 paws up!

Treats that the whole family err fur family can enjoy

I cannot believe it is already March! February just flew on by. It seems like only yesterday, we were talking about keeping our chompers healthy during Pet Dental month and now it is almost St. Patrick’s Day. I already have my bandanna on. Some hoomans like to eat corn beef and cabbage to celebrate the holiday, I just want snacks.

This month there were lots of snacks to choose from. I wanted to go with a very limited ingredient treat this time around. So limited that it actually only has one ingredient! We, meaning I picked out Primal Beef Liver Munchies. (click on the purple link to be taken directly to the Chewy site for these treats) It contains Beef Liver. It contains zero spices or flavorings, preservatives, grains, salt, or sugar. Nothing but beef liver. Sometimes you just want a simple treat and with Primal Beef Liver Munchies, you get exactly that.

IMG_2225

Primal treats are a very good source of protein. The bag indicates a min of  66% protein, that is a lot of protein. There is not a per treat calorie count, but the website indicates 130 calories per ounce and each bag weighs two ounces. There are a lot of treats in the bag. Mom figures under 10 calories per piece.

They are made from beef sourced in the USA, which is a total plus for us.  We prefer to buy stuff made where we live. The beef is free from antibiotics without any added hormones. That is something we really like.

The treats are bite sized and they are for cats and dogs! So my brothers can partake in some tasty goodness as well. You can see the both of us investigating the treats and seeing if it is something we might want to try. Spoiler alert, we tried and liked them!

IMG_2246

IMG_2227

They come in all sorts of sizes, so that the tiny ones can go to the kitties and the bigger pieces can go right into my tummy.

IMG_2229 - Copy

These treats are  freeze dried, but more importantly they are raw, so after your human gives you one or maybe ten if you are super lucky, make sure they wash their hands with soap and hot water.

Onward to the pros and cons from the three of us.

Mom says she loves that they are a single source of protein and they are good for both cats and dogs. One bag of treats can be given to all of us. She wishes that calorie count per treat was on the bag, but understands that the different sized pieces can make that determination difficult.

Icky kitty ate three of them in a row and would like them to be a little smaller. Even the small ones are a little big for his little mouth. He did not throw them back up like he does with most treats. So we know that he likes them and his sensitive tummy can handle them. (Sam kitty and Baby kitty are not fans of treats at all, so they were not included in the taste test)

I was very happy with these treats. I love raw treats. They are always super tasty. They usually contain just meat, so that is always a plus with me. I was not thrilled that I can share them with my brother. He should get his own treats!

The three of us all give paws and thumbs up. 8 paws for icky kitty and I and 2 thumbs up for mom.

Primal treats are welcome in this house, because they are quality treats and made in the USA. The raw liver munchies also come in turkey and pork. You can try all three and see which one you like best. You can see all Primal items that Chewy carries by clicking here.

Crunchy on the Outside, Beefy on the Inside

Thanksgiving is just days away and soon it will be all about the turkey, but today we talk beef! This month I decided to stick with what I knew and I know that Wellness makes some pretty good treats. We have reviewed a few of their products and have not been let down. This month was no different. I got to try out Wellness Core Grain Free Marrow Roasts. They are crunchy biscuits that have real meaty marrow inside. They are only 11 calories a piece for the Hearty Beef Recipe. The Turkey recipe is 11 calories as well.

img_1392

The marrow roasts treats are grain free, contain no by products, and list the meat protein as the first ingredient. That is very important to us. Carnivores want meat. We cannot stress enough how important it is when choosing food and treats that meat is listed first. If I wanted some veggies,  I would hit up the salad bar. It does list peas and sweet potatoes as other ingredients. I suppose that is okay since I cannot actually see any of the veggies. Down with peas! I have a huge hatred of peas, but since I cannot see them, I deal.

img_1397

As you can see the treats are not very big, so they could work for many different sized pups. I was very excited when mom held out her hand and could barely sit still while she snapped a few pictures. I wasted little time scarfing down these tasty morsels. This is probably the first time that we can recall that my treat contained marrow. I have very picky hoomans and they will not let me have just anything without researching first that it is okay for me and that the product was made in a country that has deemed acceptable to them. These treats were made right here in the U S of A.

img_1398

I am not quite sure you can see the look of intensity that is on my face. I am in full on give me my treat mode. I did indeed gobble them up like they were the last treats on earth. If I am unsure about a treat, I will drop it and lick it a few times before I pick it back up and eat it. I did not do that at all with this treat. I immediately got to chewing and swallowing and looking at mom with my best head tilt for another treat or five! I give these four paws up and hope that the Savory Turkey Recipe finds its way to my tummy in the near future.

The treats are over my 5 calorie limit because of the diet, but because I am extra cute, mom made an exception. (in reality it just means I don’t get as many treats per day because of the higher calorie count)

You can find these treats on Chewy.com as well as a lot of other great Wellness items. Check out Chewy for all your dog and feline needs.

Watch a nifty vine video here of me first trying out the treats.
