Crunchy and freeze dried? Sign me up!

It is finally September! Cooler days are headed our way. It is about time. It has been a pretty good month. I got to go to the baseball game and coming up is my 13th 5k! Not too shabby for a pup that is only 6 years old. We have not done much else because mom got into some poison ivy (her first time ever!) and being itchy and blotchy is not her idea of fun, so I played nurse instead of having walkies or trips to the park. Snuggles are always a good thing.

Here is me at the game, I was a little unsure of why they kept changing pitchers. I am still a forever and raised royal pup.

IMG_3620

Onward to the important part of this post, the yummy stuff I got to test out. There were so many choices, it was hard to pick one. I decided to settle on some freeze dried treats. I have been on a total freeze dried kick lately. This month we go back to the Stella and Chewy’s brand. A brand we have come to know and trust.

This months selection is called Carnivore Crunch. IMG_3667

IMG_3663

It comes in Duck, Chicken, Beef, and Turkey. As you can see,  I got to try out the Duck recipe. The moment she showed me the bag, I was pretty dang interested.

The duck recipe contains 98% poultry, organs, and ground bone. It of course is grain and gluten free. What about the other 2%? Well that is Pumpkin Seeds and Tocopherols (which acts as a preservative) Our bag does differ from the bag show on Chewy’s website, it looks like the recipe was changed slightly. It now contains Fenugreek seed. We took a look at what that was and it can help us with inflammation, lower blood glucose level, improve digestion, and help with skin and coat problems.

Each treat is about 2.3 kcals, So it is perfect for those pups keeping the weight down or it can be used as a training treat. They are also the perfect size. Sometimes all you need is a one bite treat. (mainly because it means I can get multiple treats at in one sitting)

IMG_3672

IMG_3669

Look at those yummy nuggets! I thought they were super tasty. I got to have five or six of them! The back of the package said that cats love them too. Mom offered a treat to Baby and Sam. They sniffed at it and then gobbled it up. Baby looked around for seconds. I am pretty sure that means he liked it. Mom even saw him trying to bust into the bag. That says a lot.

One thing that we really love about this company is their commitment to quality. Each batch is tested and those results can be found on their website. Recalls can be pretty scary when it comes to food or treats for dogs or cats. We can rest easy knowing that because the batch was tested, we do not have to worry about e coli or salmonella.  We were able to see that the batch tested negative for those bacteria’s.

So after testing this out and having to do all kinds of tricks to get them, I declare this to be worthy of 4 paws up. The kitties give four paws up as well.

We love the ingredients. Any treat that is mostly protein is always a plus in this house. We like that it is free of grains, fillers, gluten, artificial preservatives, or colorings. The size of the treat is perfect for all almost all sizes of pups and kitties. The low calorie amount makes it a great way to do training and not have to worry about over feeding of treats.

Mixer or Meal? Why not both?

It is August which means, summer is winding down. HOOORAY!  It also means that I have a birthday! I turned six this year.  I had a fabulous party. I got my very own steak and my own birthday cake from  Three Dog Bakery. I would highly recommend their cakes. Mine was peanut butter flavor. I had lots of reasons to celebrate, one of them being my weight. When mom took me to get a bath, they had me hop on the scale, it read 46.8! Goal achieved!

IMG_3489

They say lime green is the new black. I make this color look darn good.

Anyhoo, back to the important stuff. What I got to try out this month. So many different choices. I went with my favorite brand of food/treats. Merrick Pet Care. You have seen me talk about their stuff before. It really is a brand we trust.  They have continued to come up with new recipes, ideas, and products for the best dog ever. (which is me in case you are confused)

I got to test out Merricks Backcountry Freeze Dried Raw. It comes in Chicken, Beef, and Salmon. I got to try out the Chicken recipe. Chicken is my absolute favorite. This can be used as a meal mixer or as a complete meal. It can also be used as a treat.

IMG_3508

As my loyal readers know, I’ve been on this dang diet forever. I was unable to have my favorite food, Backcountry Game Bird recipe because I needed a lower fat content food. This food mixer helps me get the raw bits I love with my crunchy food. You know those kids who eat the marshmallows first out of their cereal? Yeah, I am one of those kids, except the raw bits are my tasty marshmallows. I eat all of those first, then eat the kibble.

IMG_3517

Look at those big pieces of yumminess! Mom just tosses them on top of my food, because she knows I will just sniff and pick out the raw bits anyways.

What exactly is inside these meal mixers? The first five ingredients are deboned chicken, chicken liver, dried potatoes, potato protein, and chicken broth. It also contains fruits, veggies, vitamins, and minerals. When I was fed Backcountry kibble plus raw in my pre diet days, the yummy  bits were pieces of  raw poultry that had been freeze dried. The meal mixers contain other ingredients because it can be fed as a meal. They want to make sure we get all the nutrients we need on a daily basis.

If you do choose to feed this as a meal, make sure you add 1/4 cup of water to each cup of the raw bits.  After your human handles the meal mixers they need to wash their hands thoroughly since it does contain raw meat.

This is an excellent alternative to my Game Bird Backcountry recipe. It is very tasty and is nice to have something a little special in my bowl at meal times. We only used this as a meal mixer instead of a complete meal.

Mom likes that it is grain free and does not contain any artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors.

If you are thinking about going to a raw diet for your pup, this is a good way to start. It allows you to see what they think of a raw diet, before changing over.

I give this four paws up. I am pretty darn excited that I get to have raw bits again. I was pretty sad when I got switched to a food for chubby pups. I am also holding out hope that Merrick will create a chubby pup Backcountry kibble. That way I can keep my weight down and get that raw meat I love.

Want to see what else Chewy.com has to offer? Check out their website. They have just about whatever your pet needs.

Check out my instagram post to see me in action. It really  just confirms that I eat all the raw bits first.

Walking and riding in style

Stepping outside, you can totally tell that it is July. It has been pretty hot here in Kansas City.  We usually have pretty warm to very hot summers. Walkies get limited in hot weather. My black fur does not like this heat. Which is why I like our winters, they are totally unpredictable. We can have days in the 70’s or days that are so cold, I am in a sweater for walkies. Why can’t it be winter? Walkies are so much better in the winter.

Speaking of walkies, this month  I saw a harness that I could test out. This harness is for walking and it also keeps me safe while in the car. It is made by a company called Kurgo. We had never heard of them, but reading a little bit about them, we learned that they are totally in the business of taking care of us canines. They have just about everything a dog could need for being out and about. Leashes, harnesses, car covers, coats, cooling coats, collars, booster seats, and so many other things.

The harness we got to try out is called is the Tru Fit Smart Harness with Enhanced Strength. It serves as a car harness and a walking harness. Keeping me safe while walking and riding in the car.

IMG_3261

IMG_3267

My usual harness has a loop for the leash in the front. The Kurgo harness has a ring on the back for your leash as well as the chest area so you can use this as a no pull harness. The latter is the leash option that I am accustomed to, so that is what we used.  It has a padded chest plate for added comfort and protection. All the hardware is metal. no plastic pieces on the harness.

IMG_3268

See those two metal buckles on each side of me? That is what you use to secure the harness onto me. We highly suggest watching the video that is on Chewy and Kurgos website that shows just how easy it is to put the harness on to your dog. We are used to plastic quick snap buckles, so watching the video was a big help.

IMG_3266

Can you tell that I am a very serious model? Just waiting on one of those fashion designers to have me walk their runway show. Once mom got the hang of how to put on and take off the harness we were out the door and off to do some walkies. I was born ready to do walkies.

IMG_3275

The harness fits nicely. It has 5 adjustment points, so you can get a near perfect fit. I am a bit of a barrel shaped pup. So sometimes it is hard to find things that fit properly. Kurgo recommends sizing up if you fall in between two sizes. My chest is right about 28 inches and the medium harness goes up to 28 inches, so we went with a large harness that goes from 24 to 34 inches. If you look on  Chewy’s site or Kurgo’s site, they have a sizing chart to help pick out the perfect size for your pup.

I think it is a very comfy harness and I like the padded chest plate. I also liked that it did not rub under my arm pits like other harnesses did. Walking me was easy as pie according to mom. I only tried to pull once when I saw some people I wanted to say hi to, but was quickly corrected.

We mentioned that this is not just a walking harness, but a car harness as well. It has been crash tested for dogs up to 75 lbs. If you go here, you can read the crash test report on Kurgos website. Don’t worry, no actual dogs were used in the crash testing. When securing us in the car, use the provided carabiner to secure us in. There is a best and a good practice way to secure us in the car. The video I mentioned before also explains how to secure us using your cars seatbelt demonstrating both the best and good practice methods.

It was time take a car ride and test out the car harness feature. I had to get my flu shot, so we decided the short ship to get vaccinated would be perfect to see how it worked. We tried both the good and best practice. I preferred the good practice which allowed me to move a little bit, rather than the best practice which keeps me pretty restrained.  Make sure you do not clip the carabiner onto the leash hook, you have to clip it onto the harness itself.  Due to the high temps, no pictures were taken. Riding in the car with the AC blasting is one thing, but taking pictures while the car is parked is a whole different story.

We have been using this harness for about two weeks now. After using a harness with snap buckles for a very long time, we have found that we prefer the nesting buckle system that this harness uses. The Nesting Buckle System is based on the engineering for harnesses used by rock climbers and linesmen. This makes sure that it is safe as well as strong.

We really like this harness. It is very easy to put on and adjust. Having the ability to hook the leash in two different spots is a big plus. It is a little heavier than other harnesses, but we feel that is because it is made with metal instead of plastic pieces. We have only used this in the car twice, once to get my flu shot and the other for a very short dog park trip. It was very easy to buckle me in both times using the best and good practice methods.

We really like this as a walking harness. In just a few seconds, we can be out the door and walking. Mom thinks I walk differently using this harness. Different in a good way. I don’t zig zag as much. It could be that the old harness was not sitting right under my armpits, so I kept having to adjust how I walked so it would not bother me as much. She feels I have been walking more in a straight line the whole walk rather than part of it.

We have purchased different harnesses that say they are no pull harnesses and very few of them were actually no pull. This harness is one of those few. We feel it ranks very high in terms of no pulling. When she says walking me was a breeze, she really means it. She says it was as if I was not even attached to a leash, I was that easy to walk.

If you are looking for a sturdy harness that can be used for everyday walkies as well as being a great car harness, then look no further than the Kurgo Tru Fit Smart Harness. We highly recommend this product. It has become our new walking harness. Which is saying a lot, because we recommended our old harness to just about anyone that was looking for a good no pull harness.

5 ingredients served 3 different ways

Wow! Is it already June? Seems like this year is flying by. I would prefer it to move straight on to September. I am not a fan of hot weather. I do not like water, so no jumping in pools to keep me cool or have fun swimming in. I am a cool weather kind of pup. It has already been pretty hot here in the Midwest, so I have been staying indoors where the ac is going.  I have always been a fan of indoor fetch, so I get some exercise that way.  I am still on that darn diet, so any exercise is good for me.

This month, we let the stinky kitties choose something to test out. They are working hard on their review, so I went and decided to get mine done first. They are pretty excited to talk about the food they tried, but today is all about me! (like it isn’t about me every single day) I really liked the previous food topper I tried, so I decided to try a different brand out. This month I picked out Honest Kitchen’s Proper Toppers Grain Free Turkey Recipe. It also comes in fish, beef, and chicken.

IMG_3114

Proper Toppers contain 5 whole food dehydrated food ingredients. It also contains vitamins and minerals, so if you choose to feed this as a meal, you can assure that we are getting the nutrients we need. It also can be fed as a treat in addition to being fed as a meal or meal topper. The turkey toppers ingredients include Turkey, apples, pumpkin, blueberries, and chard.  Super yummy super foods that pups love.

These super foods not only have a lot of great vitamins and minerals, but they also have a lot of great health benefits. These super foods help aid in our digestive health, keep our joints happy and healthy, and the antioxidants support our immune system.

Proper toppers contain 90% meat! It also is 100% human grade and made in a USDA inspected facility. Even though it says human grade, it does not mean that humans should be eating this. It is meant to be given to us pups only. Each tablespoon has 44.9 calories. If using as a food topper, then give 2 tablespoons per 20 lbs of body weight. I would get 5 tablespoons.

IMG_3117

It does not contain a measuring device, but my humans have three million sets of measuring spoons and cups, so not a big deal.  5 tablespoons is just about 1/3 cup. We found a chart online that converted tablespoons to cups to make it easier to measure properly. If you do choose to feed this as a complete meal then splash a little warm water on top before serving.

We are just using this as a topper, so 5 tablespoons it is. (more or less, she did not measure the first time)

IMG_3123

I got to test out a few pieces as a treat first, to see what my thoughts were. I thought it was super tasty and wanted more. When it was time for breakfast, I got less than my usual amount to make up for the additional calories that the toppers would bring to the bowl.  I went straight for the toppers and ate all of those first. I then proceeded to walk away. I was hoping for more toppers, but mom nixed that idea. I can’t help that I find something I like and want more of it!

I really liked this food topper. It has a lot of tasty ingredients (no peas!). It contains zero ingredients from China , and because it is human grade, we can feel better that they are making sure we only get the best meat available.  While mom would not feed me this as a meal due to costs, she would give this to me as a meal topper and a treat.

I give this meal topper 4 paws up!

You say stinky, I say super yummy.

These past few weeks have been very busy for me. I ran in 2 separate 5k’s, found out I am down 0.8 lbs from my last vet visit, and got my doggy Xanax for upcoming holidays where humans like to shoot off loud booming things that make me a very scared pup. My human and I got 3rd place in her age division in one of the 5k’s! I earned a medal in a 5k and that was totally the best feeling next to chin scratches of course.

IMG_2824

Clearly the medal was for me since it has a paw on the front of it!

Onward to the important part of this months blog. TREATS! We had lots of options to pick from this month and we decided to stick with what we know. We love Merrick Pet Care products and decided to try out one of the Backcountry Jerky Treats. We were sent Pacific Catch Real Salmon Jerky Dog Treats. They are long pieces of jerky that can be broken apart easily for portion control or to use for a long training session.

IMG_2859

These tasty treats have just four little ingredients.  They are made with deboned salmon, dried skim milks, mixed tocopherols (which acts as a preservative), and rosemary extract. Per the norm with Merrick, the deboned salmon is the first ingredient. That makes my tummy happy.  We like when treats have meat as the first ingredient.  Why bother calling it a salmon, turkey, chicken, beef, deer, etc treat if you are going to have a bunch of other stuff listed first.  If it is a meat treat, then show us the meat.

IMG_2864

The salmon jerky sure looked tasty, it was kind of hard to not grab the jerky while my human snapped some photos.

IMG_2862

When I smell something yummy, it is a little hard to control myself! I finally got to grab that piece of jerky and boy was it worth the wait! It was a little chewy, but very yummy. I bit it in half and enjoyed every single bite. I only got to have one treat because they are 78 kcals per treat. That of course is my whole daily treat amount. The good part is that because they can be broken up, they can last a long time.

Pros: grain free, limited ingredient, protein has the first ingredient, made in the USA, and all natural

Cons: I do not have any cons, but my human says that are super stinky and washed her hands like 7 times to get rid of the smell. (she hates all fish, so this might not be an issue for seafood lovers) and she wishes the calorie count was lower. However not everyone is like her and is a calorie counter when it comes to food and treats. I thought they had a fabulous smell, but she says I eat kitty poop, so I can’t voice my opinion on what smells good or bad.

Merrick jerky treats also come in Chicken.  If you want more information on these treats then click here!

Plus you should totally check out everything else that Chewy.com has to offer! They have super fast shipping and have pawsome customer service. We love them!

Ingredients may be small, but taste is big!

We all love eating treats. Some treats just have one ingredient like a dehydrated chew. It contains a meat or a veggie that is dried. Some treats have a zillion ingredients (most of the stuff I cannot pronounce or have any clue what it is), and then there are treats that contain a small amount of ingredients. Today is all about LIT (limited ingredient treats).

These treats are targeted to those pups that have allergy issues with ingredients. Pups that have sensitivities need yummy treats too and LIT treats can give them just that. These treats are grain free as well.  They are also aimed to help in digestive health.

This month had lots of different treats and food to choose from, we decided that since we like the idea of LIT, we would give  Natural Balance L.I.T. a try.

IMG_2514

Natural Balance L.I.T. come in two sizes Regular Breeds (14 oz) and Small Breeds (8 oz).  I got to try out the Sweet Potato and Venison flavor. The regular size has 30 calories a treat and the small one has 8 calories per treat. They come in six different flavors and the calorie content varies by flavor.

The Small Breed are packaged with smaller sized treats. As my readers know, I am on a stinky diet until pigs fly. So those smaller treats would be great because the flavor is still there, but I can have a few instead of just one!

We were sent the Regular Breed size.  The size is just right for  dogs that are my sized (50 ish pounds)

IMG_2520

See that focus? Eyes on the prize kids, eyes on the prize.

IMG_2518

They can be broken up, but might be easier to get the Small Breed size, if you are going for the lower calorie count.

These treats are pretty tasty and I kept begging for more. They are super crunchy. When you bite into the treat, little bits of the treats going raining onto the ground. So might  be easier to feed on a surface that is not a rug or carpet. I still licked it all up because I do not leave messes.

We like that they are crunchy, limited ingredient, grain free, offer two sizes, and that they have many flavors to choose from. Mom likes that they do not have any odor that is offensive to her nose. Some of my treats can be stinky to her, but wonderful to me.

We have tried other Natural Balance products and these rank just as high those other products. I give these treats four paws up!

We cannot think of any cons for this treat!

Check out my Instagram post and watch me in action crunching on these tasty treats.

Dogs, food, and a Worthy Cause

My usual brand of food is Merrick Pet Care. I have been eating their food for a long time now. They are always coming up with something new and tasty. My favorite line of theirs is the Backcountry food. You get raw bits in every bag of dry food. Plus the cans of food has some super tasty proteins like Rabbit, Venison, Duck, Salmon, and Lamb. I have tried them all and every single one of them had me going back to keep licking the bowl to see if I missed anything. At the Global Pet Expo, they introduced a new recipe in their Backcountry line. It is called Hero’s Banquet Stew.

This new recipe is a pretty special new recipe. It helps raise awareness for a cause they are very fond of. That cause is called K9s for Warriors. You see sometimes when soldiers come back home after protecting us, they have something called PTSD or TBI (traumatic brain injury). Well K9 for Warriors pairs up specially trained pups with these soldiers to help them. We all know that us dogs make things better and not as scary or stressful. These special dogs provide support and comfort to those who suffer from PTSD or TBI.

Although my humans never had to experience the awful things that these brave warriors experience. They do know that dogs make life better and are very calming. Waggy tails and a smile makes a big difference after a long day.  Shouldn’t those who fought to protect our freedoms deserve the same?

K9 for Warriors chooses pups from animal shelters across the country and then trains them.  They are then paired up with a warrior who spends three weeks training with their new pup. How pawsome is that? Everyone knows shelter pups make the best companions.

It may seem like a very simple thing, a person getting a dog, but it is so much more than that. This is improving the life of someone who defended our country, they deserve to be happy and safe. I am proud to support Merrick and this very worthy cause.

To make things even better, Merrick will make a donation for every Backcountry Hero’s Banquet item sold.

I was lucky enough to try out a can of the Backcountry Hero’s Banquet Stew.

IMG_2461

It has deboned beef as the first ingredient and it also contains lamb.  When you open up the can you see big pieces of meat, tasty green beans, and carrots. You know what you don’t see when you look inside the can?? Peas, yep this recipe only contains dried peas. No gross green balls of yuck.  Hey, there is a lot of humans that don’t like peas. I love a good green bean though, those long skinny beans are tasty.

This was a lick the bowl over and over again good. I usually only get to eat dry food. Canned food is a special treat. This one was super tasty. Canned food usually comes into two different types, a pate formula and one that contains chunks of protein and vegetables. I like the latter. I like seeing chunks of meat and veggies (except peas).

If you are a fan of canned food or Merrick, this will not disappoint you. Plenty of gravy, meat, and veggies to keep every pup happy. I will definitely want mom to put this one into my rotation of canned foods that she lets me have.

Make sure you buy this in July, so you can help those who have sacrificed so much for us.

Treats that the whole family err fur family can enjoy

I cannot believe it is already March! February just flew on by. It seems like only yesterday, we were talking about keeping our chompers healthy during Pet Dental month and now it is almost St. Patrick’s Day. I already have my bandanna on. Some hoomans like to eat corn beef and cabbage to celebrate the holiday, I just want snacks.

This month there were lots of snacks to choose from. I wanted to go with a very limited ingredient treat this time around. So limited that it actually only has one ingredient! We, meaning I picked out Primal Beef Liver Munchies. (click on the purple link to be taken directly to the Chewy site for these treats) It contains Beef Liver. It contains zero spices or flavorings, preservatives, grains, salt, or sugar. Nothing but beef liver. Sometimes you just want a simple treat and with Primal Beef Liver Munchies, you get exactly that.

IMG_2225

Primal treats are a very good source of protein. The bag indicates a min of  66% protein, that is a lot of protein. There is not a per treat calorie count, but the website indicates 130 calories per ounce and each bag weighs two ounces. There are a lot of treats in the bag. Mom figures under 10 calories per piece.

They are made from beef sourced in the USA, which is a total plus for us.  We prefer to buy stuff made where we live. The beef is free from antibiotics without any added hormones. That is something we really like.

The treats are bite sized and they are for cats and dogs! So my brothers can partake in some tasty goodness as well. You can see the both of us investigating the treats and seeing if it is something we might want to try. Spoiler alert, we tried and liked them!

IMG_2246

IMG_2227

They come in all sorts of sizes, so that the tiny ones can go to the kitties and the bigger pieces can go right into my tummy.

IMG_2229 - Copy

These treats are  freeze dried, but more importantly they are raw, so after your human gives you one or maybe ten if you are super lucky, make sure they wash their hands with soap and hot water.

Onward to the pros and cons from the three of us.

Mom says she loves that they are a single source of protein and they are good for both cats and dogs. One bag of treats can be given to all of us. She wishes that calorie count per treat was on the bag, but understands that the different sized pieces can make that determination difficult.

Icky kitty ate three of them in a row and would like them to be a little smaller. Even the small ones are a little big for his little mouth. He did not throw them back up like he does with most treats. So we know that he likes them and his sensitive tummy can handle them. (Sam kitty and Baby kitty are not fans of treats at all, so they were not included in the taste test)

I was very happy with these treats. I love raw treats. They are always super tasty. They usually contain just meat, so that is always a plus with me. I was not thrilled that I can share them with my brother. He should get his own treats!

The three of us all give paws and thumbs up. 8 paws for icky kitty and I and 2 thumbs up for mom.

Primal treats are welcome in this house, because they are quality treats and made in the USA. The raw liver munchies also come in turkey and pork. You can try all three and see which one you like best. You can see all Primal items that Chewy carries by clicking here.

A Chewy a Day Keeps the Tarter Away

This month is pet dental month. Just like hoomans, us dogs and cats need to keep our teeth healthy. Problems with teeth can lead to health issues, stinky breath, loss of teeth, and pain because bad teeth can make it hard to eat our food. Icky kitty is 14 and he just had his teeth cleaned. The vet said he is looking pretty good for a cat that old. No teeth had to be pulled, but they did reccommend brushing his teeth to keep them clean.

My chompers are looking pretty good for a five year old pup. Last vet visit, I was told a teeth cleaning was not needed for me. I bet you wonder how in the heck I do it? Well I get a chewy everyday to help keep my chompers looking good and breath smelling fresh.

Since it is dental month, lots of different dental options were offered to test out. I do have my normal chew that I get daily, but mom decided we could try out a different one in case it was better and I preferred it over the other.

The dental chew we tested out was Greenies, which is  a well known dental chew. We felt that it was a brand we could trust. We all know that when it comes to me and stuff that goes in my tummy, my hoomans become complete weirdos. So my regular dental chews were put up for a bit and we went with the Greenies.

img_1951

Before my hoomans switched to dental chews, they did try their best to use a toothbrush to clean my chompers, however I am known as a PITA,  so they looked for other options to help clean my teeth. They tried a dental cleaning liquid that was added to my drinking water. I started drinking less water when they added it to my bowl. It is very important that we get plenty of water, so that idea got nixed. They finally decided to try out dental chews. I have tied out various ones, but we are always on the lookout for a better one that I enjoy as well. Calorie count is always figured in when choosing a chew to add into my daily rotation.

Greenies is recommended by vets and it helps remove plaque and tarter buildup faster than a toothbrush can. There are many different varieties for us to chomp on. They also are easy to digest. When you look at them, the first thought might be, am I eating a toothbrush? It looks just like one!

So now on to what happened after I tested Greenies out. I did think they tasted okay. If I am not liking they way something tastes, I will spit it out and walk away. The chew did take longer to eat than my normal chew which is a good thing. Longer lasting chews mean more time that it is helping to remove plaque and tarter. I was able to easily break it up into pieces without too much trouble.

The next day, I was offered another Greenies chew and happily took it from mom. That pretty much is my seal of approval. I would happily eat these chews as an alternative to my usual one. They were tasty and I liked that they lasted longer.

Mom has to put her two cents in though. She has her likes and dislikes. First she likes that it takes me longer to chew. My usual one is a little bit smaller, I can break it up into smaller pieces much faster. She also says they are less stinky than my usual chews. When you open the bag of my usual chews, this wonderful smell pours from the bag. Mom says there are a lot of other words to describe it, none of which are wonderful. She likes that they come in different varieties. They have a weight management chew for dogs that are older and not moving as much or dogs that are dieting. They have grain free treats, hip and joint,  mint flavored ones, and ones that are blueberry flavored.

Of course mom has to find the one negative thing that makes it difficult for her to choose this chew for me as a replacement for my daily chew. The calorie count. The  chews for large dogs are 152 calories a piece. We all know by now that my treat calorie limit is 80 calories. That is almost double the amount for my treat allotment. The small regular chew is 95 calories, still over the limit. We might switch to the regular chew and use it sparingly. I really like these treats and mom feels that they are working. My breath is not that stinky and my teeth are looking pretty. Mom is thinking that the best way to still get the benefits of Greenies, but not destroying the diet, would be to use Greenies a couple times per week and my regular chews the other days. I would only be getting 30 extra calories instead of 105 extra calories. It is a win win situation. Mom still gets to be strict on my diet and I get to have a tasty chew that is helping me have pretty chompers.

So our final verdict is 3 paws up. One paw removed because of the high calorie content. That is only because of my silly diet. It truly deserves four paws, but my small weight issue prevents it from completely replacing my current chew.

Wobbling fun

I really love eating and sometimes when I eat, I tend to scarf it down so fast that I get threatened with a slow bowl. Slow bowls are weird contraptions that force me to slow down so I can have a proper meal without getting sick. The slow bowls are kind of annoying. It takes me forever to eat. This month, we saw that we could try out this Kong toy that wobbles back and forth. It dispenses treats or food. Mom figured it would be a fun way to have me eat.

The Kong Wobbler has a weighted bottom and wobbles to and fro. If I smack it down, it just goes right back to standing up tall. If I hit it just right, food/treats fall out. It is amazing! The large Wobbler holds a cup of food. Perfect for me since right now  I am fed 3/4 cup twice a day.

First off mom showed me the bag of treats and then put some of  them in the Wobbler. She set it on the ground, then let me investigate. I sniffed it and realized that it had some yummy smelling stuff in there. I smacked it a few times and realized it moved around.

No matter how many times I knocked it down, it just got right back up again. I kept hitting it, then saw treats fall out. I gobbled them up and then kept smacking it until I knew that it was empty. Once it was empty I lost interest.

I really liked this toy. I got treats and was able to get a little exercise. Working off the treats while I eat. I like that concept. I did get a little mad when I hit it enough times it got up against a wall and I could not get it to move away from there. Once mom moved it away from the wall, I was back in business.

The next time she let me use it, she filled it with my nightly ration of food. It took a very long time to eat dinner, but I had fun while eating, so I did not mind too much. I just kept smacking it around until no more crunchies were rolling around in the  Wobbler. I preferred this over my slow bowls. It added an element of fun to meal time instead of a lot of frustration.

On to some technical stuff. It has a weighed base, so it is pretty heavy. Mom has yet to see me lift it up and try to throw it down the stairs which I do to most of my other treat dispensers. It seems to be made of pretty strong material. The top screws off so it can be refilled. It is dishwasher safe, but has to go on the top shelf. This is not a chew toy, so make sure you are watching when we have Wobbler time.

Mom gives this two thumbs up and I give this four paws up. This is a treat/meal dispenser that I would recommend to anyone who wants some fun while eating or needs to slow a pup down who is a speed eater.
