Freeze Dried Fun

Hai! I am Bater, or Icky Kitty which is the silly nickname that the dog gave me. I have taken over the blog today. Lily is off at the vet to get a bath. HAHAHAHA They need to clean themselves like me. I only have have to see the vet to get stabs and teeth cleanings. I got to pick out something to try out this month, because I am always left out. I do not like wet food and the only toys I like are hair ties and my cat nip pouches from Three Dog Bakery.

I saw that they had some freeze dried food from Stella and Chewy’s. I saw Lily enjoying the food toppers  she got from them and decided I needed to check them out as well. I am a very picky eater. I have been known to go on a food strike if I decide that my current food is no longer up to my standards. I will pretty much demand a new food. I am a cat, it is just what we do. Keeping those humans on their toes.

I got to try out Duck Duck Goose. Can you guess what protein they use? Duck and turkey.  I love turkey and duck. If I get food, I pretty much demand it contains poultry.  They also have Chick Chick Chicken, Tummy Ticklin’ Turkey, Yummy Lickin’ Salmon and Chicken, and Sea-Licious Salmon and Cod. Lots of great flavors to try out!

Who needs a human when you have sharp teeth? I eventually let go and let mom open up the bag and let me take a sniff or two. I thought it smelled very tasty. I am not sure why it took so long to get the food into my bowl. This is a freeze dried food, so you need to add 1/2 cup of cold or warm (not hot) water to 1 cup of food. Wait one minute and then let us starting digging in. You can feed this to us dry, but make sure there is plenty of water available at meal times. I am a dry food kind of guy, so no water was added. With 3 kitties and one pup, we have lots of water bowls filled at all times. So having water available is never an issue.

IMG_3320

The chunks of food are bigger than I am used to, but I did not have any problems eating them. I did not stop eating until I was full. I really liked this food. It was very tasty and a nice break from my normal food.  I gobbled it up on my next meal time. I did attempt to try it once it had water added to it, but I was not impressed. I prefer my food to be dry and have plenty of water near by. When there was just a tiny bit left, mom just put a few pieces on top of my food.

This is the first time I got to try a freeze dried food, which made the humans a little nervous. I am notorious for hating things, so they were not sure how I would react to a different form of food. I surprised them by taking to freeze dried food like a pro. I have had food that had freeze dried bits added, which is super tasty, but just freeze dried bits is a whole different thing.

Long ago,  my human was uneducated about the quality of cat food. I was fed a food that probably would only get 1 or 2 stars on my pet food quality sites. She then started reading and researching and suddenly I was fed a food that did not contain a vegetable as the first ingredient. I am a cat, do you see a tiger stopping by the produce section first or the meat department? We like our meat, we have sharp teeth for a reason.

Stella and Chewy’s  Duck Duck Goose Dinner Morsels contain 98% poultry, nutrient rich organs, and bone. They also make sure we get all the vitamins and minerals we need to keep us happy and healthy. It is grain free, filler free, gluten free. They put in all the good stuff and keep out the bad stuff.

How can you be sure they keep out the bad stuff? They test each batch to make sure it does not contain any bacteria that could make us sick. When you go onto Stella and Chewy’s website, look at the top right corner. There is an area to enter in the lot number that is printed on each bag of food. Once the lot number is found, you can open a PDF file that shows the results of the tests.

So what makes freeze dried raw food better than plain ole crunchy food? Well, you see with regular food, there can be heavy processing of ingredients, so we get less of the good stuff we need to stay healthy, but with freeze-dried, you still get all that goodness. That goodness can make us have less allergies, maintain a healthy weight, have less tummy issues, keep our skin and coat looking pretty (you know that cats like looking pretty at all times), and make sure that we have a good appetite.

I am giving this food four paws up! It is a very high quality food that is super tasty.

Thanks for letting me steal Lily’s blog for the day. She isn’t all that bad. She lets me sleep on her bed sometimes in exchange for not ratting her out for getting on the comfy recliner.

You can check out her instagram and see a video of me!

Chewy.com ships my food to me every 2 months, which means that I don’t have to worry about ever running out. You should look at their site if you haven’t already. They have lots of stuff and have super fast shipping and great customer service.

Mary had a little lamb and boy was it tasty

Hi guys and gals, I’m Baby. I am one of Lily’s brofurs. Every once in a while Lily lets us pick out something to test out. She was feeling nice this month and let us pick out something to review. Bater aka icky kitty did not want to participate. He is more of a dry food kind of guy.  So just my brofur Sam and I are the taste testers this month.

We knew that Lily liked some treats from a company called Ziwi Peak. They are from New Zealand. Mom is pretty picky and only likes to buy treats and food made in the US, but she makes an exception for Ziwi Peak because of the high quality food and treats it provides for us kitties and pups.

IMG_3153

We were pretty excited when mom popped open the can, she could barely snap a picture or two before we were trying to dig right in.

IMG_3165

IMG_3160

The recipe we tried was Lamb. When you look at the back of the can the first five ingredients are lamb, lamb broth, lamb liver, lamb lung,  and lamb kidney. That is a whole lot of lamb. Then after some chick peas, they have lamb tripe and lamb heart. You  practically get a whole lamb in one can. Well not really, I am pretty sure lambs are bigger than one of these cans. You also have some New Zealand Green Mussel, lamb bone, and dried kelp. When you really look at it, the can of food contains lamb, chick peas, mussel, and kelp. They do add some vitamins and minerals to make sure we get everything us mini lions need.

We devoured the can. Pretty sure it was a record of how fast we ate the food. We really liked this food. We are not huge fans of pate, but we had zero problems devouring this. Our usual food has 5.5 oz of food in each can, this can contains 6.5 oz. The extra ounce was nothing for us. We did not even bat a whisker at the extra amount. In fact we were pretty happy about it.

IMG_3159

Isn’t that a glorious plate? So much yummy goodness. That my furry pals is 93% meat, organs, and  NZ green mussels. This recipe is designed to mirror the whole prey nutrient dense diet using those very ingredients. We are tiny predators and we want to eat like our mighty feline relatives.

Ziwi Peak never includes grains, rice, corn, soy, potatoes, wheat, fillers, sugars, glycerin’s, rendered meals, preservatives, TSPP, BPA, guar gum, agar agar or carrageenan.  Not using any of those products helps keep the formula as natural as possible.

Their lamb is 100% single-sourced lamb which is  free-range and grass-fed on ethical and sustainable New Zealand farms; free of antibiotics, growth promotants and added hormones.

We know that is a lot of big  and sometimes confusing words, but what they are trying to say is that they want to make sure that they are providing the best possible food for us kitties by using only the best proteins and ingredients. Which is a very good thing. Quality food makes for a very happy and healthy kitty.

Sam and I give this food four paws up. We loved this food, we are hoping that mom gets more of it. Mom says she will, but it will just be in rotation and will not take place of our usual food. Sometimes we are being jerk faces and refuse to eat our regular food, so mom has cans of extra special food set aside that she knows we will eat. We definitely prefer this food to our normal food. It is very tasty and who knew that lamb could be so yummy? We usually eat just turkey or chicken. It is nice to have another protein for our supper time.

Ziwi Peak also offers recipes using beef, mackerel, venison, and rabbit. I think they should come out with a variety pack, so we could try them all!

If you are looking for a high protein food, that contains zero fillers, grains, or preservatives, then check out Ziwi Peak right meow. We are  pretty sure you will be purring rather than hissing after mealtime.

You can see what good eaters we are by checking out our Instagram post.

Treats that the whole family err fur family can enjoy

I cannot believe it is already March! February just flew on by. It seems like only yesterday, we were talking about keeping our chompers healthy during Pet Dental month and now it is almost St. Patrick’s Day. I already have my bandanna on. Some hoomans like to eat corn beef and cabbage to celebrate the holiday, I just want snacks.

This month there were lots of snacks to choose from. I wanted to go with a very limited ingredient treat this time around. So limited that it actually only has one ingredient! We, meaning I picked out Primal Beef Liver Munchies. (click on the purple link to be taken directly to the Chewy site for these treats) It contains Beef Liver. It contains zero spices or flavorings, preservatives, grains, salt, or sugar. Nothing but beef liver. Sometimes you just want a simple treat and with Primal Beef Liver Munchies, you get exactly that.

IMG_2225

Primal treats are a very good source of protein. The bag indicates a min of  66% protein, that is a lot of protein. There is not a per treat calorie count, but the website indicates 130 calories per ounce and each bag weighs two ounces. There are a lot of treats in the bag. Mom figures under 10 calories per piece.

They are made from beef sourced in the USA, which is a total plus for us.  We prefer to buy stuff made where we live. The beef is free from antibiotics without any added hormones. That is something we really like.

The treats are bite sized and they are for cats and dogs! So my brothers can partake in some tasty goodness as well. You can see the both of us investigating the treats and seeing if it is something we might want to try. Spoiler alert, we tried and liked them!

IMG_2246

IMG_2227

They come in all sorts of sizes, so that the tiny ones can go to the kitties and the bigger pieces can go right into my tummy.

IMG_2229 - Copy

These treats are  freeze dried, but more importantly they are raw, so after your human gives you one or maybe ten if you are super lucky, make sure they wash their hands with soap and hot water.

Onward to the pros and cons from the three of us.

Mom says she loves that they are a single source of protein and they are good for both cats and dogs. One bag of treats can be given to all of us. She wishes that calorie count per treat was on the bag, but understands that the different sized pieces can make that determination difficult.

Icky kitty ate three of them in a row and would like them to be a little smaller. Even the small ones are a little big for his little mouth. He did not throw them back up like he does with most treats. So we know that he likes them and his sensitive tummy can handle them. (Sam kitty and Baby kitty are not fans of treats at all, so they were not included in the taste test)

I was very happy with these treats. I love raw treats. They are always super tasty. They usually contain just meat, so that is always a plus with me. I was not thrilled that I can share them with my brother. He should get his own treats!

The three of us all give paws and thumbs up. 8 paws for icky kitty and I and 2 thumbs up for mom.

Primal treats are welcome in this house, because they are quality treats and made in the USA. The raw liver munchies also come in turkey and pork. You can try all three and see which one you like best. You can see all Primal items that Chewy carries by clicking here.

This one is for the fishes

Hi! I am your guest blogger today. My name is Sam, also known as Sammy, Samuel, old yellow, and yellow kitty. I am Lily’s feline brother. Actually there are three of us! Baby and Bater are my two other feline brothers. This month we decided that it was time for us to test something out. We are not big on eating treats, so when we saw food being offered, we pounced at the chance to put some food to the test.

We are some picky kitties. Really picky eaters. One day we will like one type of can food, then the next day we will turn our tiny pink noses up at it. Baby and I are the can food eaters, Bater just likes to have a nibble here and there. He is all about the crunchy food.

The can food we got to test out is Tiki Cat. We have tried Tiki cat before, but this one is all seafood. Now remember when I said we are picky eaters? Well that includes most seafood. So mom was skeptical, but knew that we were Tiki Cat fans. She says it is her go to food when we refuse to eat anything at all. She pops open a can and suddenly we have an appetite. We just like the really good stuff!

img_1787

That is Bater, he insisted on being the model. This variety pack includes the following flavors: Ahi Tuna, Sardine Cutlets, Tuna in Crab Surimi Consommé, Mackerel and Sardines in Calamari Consommé, Sardine Cutlets in Lobster Consommé, and Ahi Tuna with Crab in Tuna Consommé. WOW! That is so many different types of seafood.  We were ready to try some new types of food. After some loud meowing, she put a can down and let us see what we thought.

The first one we tried was the Ahi Tuna with Crab. It was delicious! Even the supposed hater of wet food joined in. That is really saying something.

img_1788

img_1811

The next day we got to try the Sardine Cutlets in Lobster Consommé. This one we had mixed reviews on. We liked the lobster part, but the sardines we did not like very much. In fact, that stinky dog ate them!

Next up was Ahi Tuna, which we thought was very good. Day by day, we got to try all the other flavors and it seems that all round we love everything but the sardines. We are just not fans of them. Just like out canine sister who hates peas, we just hate sardines.

Tiki Cat is high in protein, but low in fat. So that means we can keep fit while enjoying some very fancy food. It is also made from human grade ingredients. The quality of the seafood is so high, that it is certified for human consumption. Not that my mom would, she is not a fan of seafood.  Mom did not like the smell of them at all, but we thought they smelled very good. She does not know what she is missing.

We give this 3 paws up because of out dislike of the sardines. Don’t let that stop you from trying this food out. Tiki Cat is very tasty. To get more information on our variety pack visit Chewy.com
