A Dandy Treat or a Way to Make a Meal Complete

It is a new year and we are hoping this year will be pawsome! We haven’t gotten much snow yet, which is lame. I am a snow dog, I need some snow! What is the point of getting fancy and stylish sweaters if you cannot wear them? Crossing my paws we get one good snowfall so I can do proper zoomies.

You know what is great after some proper snow zoomies? A protein filled snack. This month, there were lots of great choices to review. I decided that I wanted to try out a food topper. This food topper is from Wellness. I have tested out their treats before and they have always been pretty tasty.

This months selection is called Wellness Core Simply Shreds. The simply part means that it contains limited ingredients. It comes in four different flavors. Chicken, Beef, and carrots; Chicken, Salmon, and Pumpkin; Tuna, Beef, and Carrots; Chicken, Chicken liver, and Broccoli. I picked out Chicken, Beef, and Carrots.

It contains five ingredients! Just five! Chicken, Beef, chicken broth, water, and carrots. It is made with no grain, meat by-products, wheat, corn, soy, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives It does not contain potatoes, so pups with allergies can enjoy a tasty snack or meal topper. It comes in a tear away pouch, so it is super easy to feed as a snack or to top your food.

Each pouch of this flavor contains 47 kcals. Some of my chewy treats contain that many calories if not more.  So after a long walk or even one of our 5k’s, this is a great way to refuel. It is packed with protein and the carrots give us beta carotene to help protect against cataracts and heart disease.

As the name implies, the meat is shredded, so it can get all mixed in with your dry food if that is what you choose to do. I prefer to just have it right on top.

You can see the tasty chicken, beef, and carrots. The broth went to the bottom of the bowl and I went straight for that, after I ate all the topper of course. Mom wasn’t sure if I would be okay with liquid added to my dry food. I did not like when she added goats milk to my food. I did not have any issue with the broth.  I loved it. I moved my dry food around, so I could lick up all the broth.

I gobbled up the chicken, beef, and carrots pretty fast. I might have growled at one of the kitties for trying to get close to my tastiness. It is so tasty that everyone wants to have a bite. It is not a full meal, so it should only be used as a topper or a treat. We need to make sure we get all those essential vitamins and minerals we need to keep us healthy and happy.

Each of the different flavors contains 5 ingredients. This is the type of snack that mom and I both like. I like it because it is super tasty and mom likes the limited ingredients. She much rather give me a pouch of this, then a chewy.

I really liked these pouches. After two days of having it top my food, I was pretty much demanding that she add it to my food or else I did not want to eat it. Produce the goods lady.  It is a nice change to have wet food on top of the dry food. She did lessen the amount of dry food that she gave me to make up for the calories contained in the pouch. Even though I am not on a diet anymore, I still maintain a steady amount of calories per day. I would prefer to stay off the chubby puppy food.

After seeing how tasty this flavor is, I hope I get to try out the other three flavors. I give this meal topper/treat four paws up. Have your human get some ordered today. You wont regret it!

Dogs, food, and a Worthy Cause

My usual brand of food is Merrick Pet Care. I have been eating their food for a long time now. They are always coming up with something new and tasty. My favorite line of theirs is the Backcountry food. You get raw bits in every bag of dry food. Plus the cans of food has some super tasty proteins like Rabbit, Venison, Duck, Salmon, and Lamb. I have tried them all and every single one of them had me going back to keep licking the bowl to see if I missed anything. At the Global Pet Expo, they introduced a new recipe in their Backcountry line. It is called Hero’s Banquet Stew.

This new recipe is a pretty special new recipe. It helps raise awareness for a cause they are very fond of. That cause is called K9s for Warriors. You see sometimes when soldiers come back home after protecting us, they have something called PTSD or TBI (traumatic brain injury). Well K9 for Warriors pairs up specially trained pups with these soldiers to help them. We all know that us dogs make things better and not as scary or stressful. These special dogs provide support and comfort to those who suffer from PTSD or TBI.

Although my humans never had to experience the awful things that these brave warriors experience. They do know that dogs make life better and are very calming. Waggy tails and a smile makes a big difference after a long day.  Shouldn’t those who fought to protect our freedoms deserve the same?

K9 for Warriors chooses pups from animal shelters across the country and then trains them.  They are then paired up with a warrior who spends three weeks training with their new pup. How pawsome is that? Everyone knows shelter pups make the best companions.

It may seem like a very simple thing, a person getting a dog, but it is so much more than that. This is improving the life of someone who defended our country, they deserve to be happy and safe. I am proud to support Merrick and this very worthy cause.

To make things even better, Merrick will make a donation for every Backcountry Hero’s Banquet item sold.

I was lucky enough to try out a can of the Backcountry Hero’s Banquet Stew.

It has deboned beef as the first ingredient and it also contains lamb.  When you open up the can you see big pieces of meat, tasty green beans, and carrots. You know what you don’t see when you look inside the can?? Peas, yep this recipe only contains dried peas. No gross green balls of yuck.  Hey, there is a lot of humans that don’t like peas. I love a good green bean though, those long skinny beans are tasty.

This was a lick the bowl over and over again good. I usually only get to eat dry food. Canned food is a special treat. This one was super tasty. Canned food usually comes into two different types, a pate formula and one that contains chunks of protein and vegetables. I like the latter. I like seeing chunks of meat and veggies (except peas).

If you are a fan of canned food or Merrick, this will not disappoint you. Plenty of gravy, meat, and veggies to keep every pup happy. I will definitely want mom to put this one into my rotation of canned foods that she lets me have.

Make sure you buy this in July, so you can help those who have sacrificed so much for us.

Eating raw part duex

So earlier this month, I tried out some tasty raw treats. Now it is time to talk about raw food toppers. Raw food toppers go on top of our kibble or as a stand alone meal. Before I was put on my diet, my food had freeze dried raw bits included with the dry kibble. It was amazing and tasty. I would pick out all the raw bits first, then move on to the kibble part. Mom likened it to a kid eating the marshmallows out of the cereal first. I missed having that in my food.  They do not have a diet version of that yummy food. When I found out I could test out some freeze dried raw toppers, I said yes please!

The company that makes the topper is called Stella and Chewy’s, it is a company we have heard of, but have not tried. They make meal mixers, super blends, dog food, cat food, and dog treats. They are made right here in the USA. They get their proteins from the North America, New Zealand, and Australia. They make sure that only the best goes into their products. That is something that we like. Being picky about what we eat is not  a bad thing. It is scary how many recalls we read about, so making sure our food comes from a trusted source is a top priority.

I got to test out Grass Fed Beef Recipe Superblend. It has beef of course and a blend of nutrient rich super foods! It contains 90% beef, nutrient rich organs, and bones. Plus has lot of  fruits and veggies (no peas!!). Probiotics, minerals, and vitamins are also added to make sure we have a balanced diet.

It comes with a scoop so that your human can measure  the right amount to give you. Each scoop is 75 kcal, so make sure the amount of dry kibble is reduced, so we don’t get overfed. If you are going to get this as a stand alone food, 2 tablespoons of  cool or warm water can be added to the freeze dried bits to re-hydrate.  The bits can be fed on their own, if that happens, we need plenty of fresh water available for us. Your human should wash their hands with hot water and soap after handing this product. They should also make sure our bowl get cleaned as well after we are done eating.

Raw food helps with digestion, our skin and coat, stamina and vitality, and helps out our chompers. Why not add some fun and tastiness to our already yummy kibble?

Mom showed me the bag and I sniffed and was very interested. I got to sniff the scoop of raw bits before it was added into my food. I really wanted to eat right out of the scoop!

Mom added the scoop and I got to eating, I ate all the raw bits, then moved on to the kibble. What can I say, raw bits are really tasty and I want to eat that first.

I says it is a compliment to the chef! It was very good and I even ate the freeze dried superfoods. Usually I only eat blueberries if they are in a muffin. This is definitely something that I would want added to the rotation.

I got to have this a few days in a row and each time I made sure to eat all the raw bits first before moving on to my regular food.  I really liked this and it comes in different proteins. They also have chicken and duck. For small breeds, they have a chicken version for them. I certainly would like to try duck and chicken. I love those proteins.

You know how earlier I said we are super picky about food? Well Stella and Chewy’s went one step further in earning my humans trust. You can enter in the lot number from the bag and get test results from harmful bacteria they test for. We did exactly that and our food tested negative for all that nasty stuff that so many things get recalled for. No listeria, salmonella,, or e coli was found in my bag of meal mixers. Having a company do that makes us see that they are serious about safety. We do not have to worry that later on something I ate could contain something that could hurt me.

So both mom and I were pleased with the meal mixers. I thought it was super tasty and cannot wait for my next bag to be ordered. Mom is happy that they go above and beyond when it comes to using quality ingredients and their level of food safety.

I give this four paws up! Click here to check out all the Stella and Chewy’s products that they have to offer.

Chewy.com offers a lot of other great products for dogs, cats, and other pets. They also have the best customer service! (trust me, they treat their customers like family)

Watch me in action trying out the meal mixers on Instagram!

Treats that the whole family err fur family can enjoy

I cannot believe it is already March! February just flew on by. It seems like only yesterday, we were talking about keeping our chompers healthy during Pet Dental month and now it is almost St. Patrick’s Day. I already have my bandanna on. Some hoomans like to eat corn beef and cabbage to celebrate the holiday, I just want snacks.

This month there were lots of snacks to choose from. I wanted to go with a very limited ingredient treat this time around. So limited that it actually only has one ingredient! We, meaning I picked out Primal Beef Liver Munchies. (click on the purple link to be taken directly to the Chewy site for these treats) It contains Beef Liver. It contains zero spices or flavorings, preservatives, grains, salt, or sugar. Nothing but beef liver. Sometimes you just want a simple treat and with Primal Beef Liver Munchies, you get exactly that.

Primal treats are a very good source of protein. The bag indicates a min of  66% protein, that is a lot of protein. There is not a per treat calorie count, but the website indicates 130 calories per ounce and each bag weighs two ounces. There are a lot of treats in the bag. Mom figures under 10 calories per piece.

They are made from beef sourced in the USA, which is a total plus for us.  We prefer to buy stuff made where we live. The beef is free from antibiotics without any added hormones. That is something we really like.

The treats are bite sized and they are for cats and dogs! So my brothers can partake in some tasty goodness as well. You can see the both of us investigating the treats and seeing if it is something we might want to try. Spoiler alert, we tried and liked them!

They come in all sorts of sizes, so that the tiny ones can go to the kitties and the bigger pieces can go right into my tummy.

These treats are  freeze dried, but more importantly they are raw, so after your human gives you one or maybe ten if you are super lucky, make sure they wash their hands with soap and hot water.

Onward to the pros and cons from the three of us.

Mom says she loves that they are a single source of protein and they are good for both cats and dogs. One bag of treats can be given to all of us. She wishes that calorie count per treat was on the bag, but understands that the different sized pieces can make that determination difficult.

Icky kitty ate three of them in a row and would like them to be a little smaller. Even the small ones are a little big for his little mouth. He did not throw them back up like he does with most treats. So we know that he likes them and his sensitive tummy can handle them. (Sam kitty and Baby kitty are not fans of treats at all, so they were not included in the taste test)

I was very happy with these treats. I love raw treats. They are always super tasty. They usually contain just meat, so that is always a plus with me. I was not thrilled that I can share them with my brother. He should get his own treats!

The three of us all give paws and thumbs up. 8 paws for icky kitty and I and 2 thumbs up for mom.

Primal treats are welcome in this house, because they are quality treats and made in the USA. The raw liver munchies also come in turkey and pork. You can try all three and see which one you like best. You can see all Primal items that Chewy carries by clicking here.

Keeping it raw and tasty.

Christmas has come and gone. It was a pretty good holiday for me this year. I got to spend extra days with my hoomans, eat some table scraps (My diet is still happening. I heard that dogs need the extra padding during the winter, so an extra bite here or there cannot hurt me too much.), got new toys, and sent some cool bandanas that mom made to the shelter I came from. Winter in the Midwest generally means we get to freeze for a few months, before busting out the extra water bowls and start wishing it was winter again.

Speaking of things that are frozen, my favorite food has freeze dried raw pieces of chicken in the bag. Right now, I cannot have that yummy food, because of the diet. Raw freeze dried bits of meat is tasty and a nice snack. Mom likened my love of the raw bits to a kid eating all the marshmallows first from a bowl of cereal. I pick out all the raw bits first, then eat the kibble.

This month we had quite a few options to choose from to test out. One in particular caught my eye! it was a freeze dried raw treat. Choosing that one to test out this month was a no brainer.

This months selection is from a company called Stewart Pro-Treat. They make lots of different freeze dried treats and even treats for ferrets! They are made in the USA, which works for us. There are only a few countries that we trust to get our treats from, the USA of course is one of them.

They are called Stewart Pro-Treat Raw Naturals Real Beef with Berries and Flaxseed.

The ingredients are  Beef, beef hearts, beef liver, ground beef bone, broccoli, carrots, romaine lettuce, beef kidneys, apples, flaxseed, salmon oil, apple cider vinegar, blueberries, cranberries, inulin, dried kelp meal, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, dried dried ginger, dried parsley, dried garlic, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, mixed tocopherols (a preservative), rosemary extract, Vitamin E supplement, Vitamin D supplement.

There are more ingredients then we usually like in a treat, but there are lots of good stuff that has been added to make them a healthy treat. The first four ingredients are all beef! They are pretty serious about making sure they have beef inside. They of course have to make sure I get my fruits and veggies. I am happy to see that peas are not listed. (down with peas)

img_1609The ones I tested are perfect size for me. They are not too big or too small. They could work as training treats for dogs my size or bigger. Each treat contains 8 kcals. It is more then my 5 kcal limit, but I am testing them out, so we can bend the rules a bit. I liked these from the moment they passed my cute doggy lips. I ate all three of those treats in seconds.

Stewart Pro-Treat only uses the best human grade ingredients. Just because they use human grade ingredients, does not mean you can have some. These are just for us canines. They freeze dry all the ingredients just at the right time to maximize the nutritional goodness.

I though they were super tasty and was trying to get my nose in the bag to get more. They get 4 paws up. I hope to try more from Stewart Pro-Treat. If all their treats taste this good, then they can certainly be put in the treat rotation. If you want to buy some of these tasty treats, then follow this link.

You can find other Stewart Pro-Treat products and lots of other great products at  Chewy.com

As always, you can watch a video here of me snacking on the yummy goodness.

Remember hoomans, treats are exactly that. They should not make up more than 10% of our daily calorie intake and we should always have fresh water around. Also, since these are raw treats, it might be a good idea to wash the hands after handling them.
