Dogs, food, and a Worthy Cause

My usual brand of food is Merrick Pet Care. I have been eating their food for a long time now. They are always coming up with something new and tasty. My favorite line of theirs is the Backcountry food. You get raw bits in every bag of dry food. Plus the cans of food has some super tasty proteins like Rabbit, Venison, Duck, Salmon, and Lamb. I have tried them all and every single one of them had me going back to keep licking the bowl to see if I missed anything. At the Global Pet Expo, they introduced a new recipe in their Backcountry line. It is called Hero’s Banquet Stew.

This new recipe is a pretty special new recipe. It helps raise awareness for a cause they are very fond of. That cause is called K9s for Warriors. You see sometimes when soldiers come back home after protecting us, they have something called PTSD or TBI (traumatic brain injury). Well K9 for Warriors pairs up specially trained pups with these soldiers to help them. We all know that us dogs make things better and not as scary or stressful. These special dogs provide support and comfort to those who suffer from PTSD or TBI.

Although my humans never had to experience the awful things that these brave warriors experience. They do know that dogs make life better and are very calming. Waggy tails and a smile makes a big difference after a long day.  Shouldn’t those who fought to protect our freedoms deserve the same?

K9 for Warriors chooses pups from animal shelters across the country and then trains them.  They are then paired up with a warrior who spends three weeks training with their new pup. How pawsome is that? Everyone knows shelter pups make the best companions.

It may seem like a very simple thing, a person getting a dog, but it is so much more than that. This is improving the life of someone who defended our country, they deserve to be happy and safe. I am proud to support Merrick and this very worthy cause.

To make things even better, Merrick will make a donation for every Backcountry Hero’s Banquet item sold.

I was lucky enough to try out a can of the Backcountry Hero’s Banquet Stew.

IMG_2461

It has deboned beef as the first ingredient and it also contains lamb.  When you open up the can you see big pieces of meat, tasty green beans, and carrots. You know what you don’t see when you look inside the can?? Peas, yep this recipe only contains dried peas. No gross green balls of yuck.  Hey, there is a lot of humans that don’t like peas. I love a good green bean though, those long skinny beans are tasty.

This was a lick the bowl over and over again good. I usually only get to eat dry food. Canned food is a special treat. This one was super tasty. Canned food usually comes into two different types, a pate formula and one that contains chunks of protein and vegetables. I like the latter. I like seeing chunks of meat and veggies (except peas).

If you are a fan of canned food or Merrick, this will not disappoint you. Plenty of gravy, meat, and veggies to keep every pup happy. I will definitely want mom to put this one into my rotation of canned foods that she lets me have.

Make sure you buy this in July, so you can help those who have sacrificed so much for us.

Eating raw part duex

So earlier this month, I tried out some tasty raw treats. Now it is time to talk about raw food toppers. Raw food toppers go on top of our kibble or as a stand alone meal. Before I was put on my diet, my food had freeze dried raw bits included with the dry kibble. It was amazing and tasty. I would pick out all the raw bits first, then move on to the kibble part. Mom likened it to a kid eating the marshmallows out of the cereal first. I missed having that in my food.  They do not have a diet version of that yummy food. When I found out I could test out some freeze dried raw toppers, I said yes please!

The company that makes the topper is called Stella and Chewy’s, it is a company we have heard of, but have not tried. They make meal mixers, super blends, dog food, cat food, and dog treats. They are made right here in the USA. They get their proteins from the North America, New Zealand, and Australia. They make sure that only the best goes into their products. That is something that we like. Being picky about what we eat is not  a bad thing. It is scary how many recalls we read about, so making sure our food comes from a trusted source is a top priority.

I got to test out Grass Fed Beef Recipe Superblend. It has beef of course and a blend of nutrient rich super foods! It contains 90% beef, nutrient rich organs, and bones. Plus has lot of  fruits and veggies (no peas!!). Probiotics, minerals, and vitamins are also added to make sure we have a balanced diet.

IMG_2323

It comes with a scoop so that your human can measure  the right amount to give you. Each scoop is 75 kcal, so make sure the amount of dry kibble is reduced, so we don’t get overfed. If you are going to get this as a stand alone food, 2 tablespoons of  cool or warm water can be added to the freeze dried bits to re-hydrate.  The bits can be fed on their own, if that happens, we need plenty of fresh water available for us. Your human should wash their hands with hot water and soap after handing this product. They should also make sure our bowl get cleaned as well after we are done eating.

Raw food helps with digestion, our skin and coat, stamina and vitality, and helps out our chompers. Why not add some fun and tastiness to our already yummy kibble?

Mom showed me the bag and I sniffed and was very interested. I got to sniff the scoop of raw bits before it was added into my food. I really wanted to eat right out of the scoop!

IMG_2330

Mom added the scoop and I got to eating, I ate all the raw bits, then moved on to the kibble. What can I say, raw bits are really tasty and I want to eat that first.

IMG_2332

I says it is a compliment to the chef! It was very good and I even ate the freeze dried superfoods. Usually I only eat blueberries if they are in a muffin. This is definitely something that I would want added to the rotation.

I got to have this a few days in a row and each time I made sure to eat all the raw bits first before moving on to my regular food.  I really liked this and it comes in different proteins. They also have chicken and duck. For small breeds, they have a chicken version for them. I certainly would like to try duck and chicken. I love those proteins.

You know how earlier I said we are super picky about food? Well Stella and Chewy’s went one step further in earning my humans trust. You can enter in the lot number from the bag and get test results from harmful bacteria they test for. We did exactly that and our food tested negative for all that nasty stuff that so many things get recalled for. No listeria, salmonella,, or e coli was found in my bag of meal mixers. Having a company do that makes us see that they are serious about safety. We do not have to worry that later on something I ate could contain something that could hurt me.

So both mom and I were pleased with the meal mixers. I thought it was super tasty and cannot wait for my next bag to be ordered. Mom is happy that they go above and beyond when it comes to using quality ingredients and their level of food safety.

I give this four paws up! Click here to check out all the Stella and Chewy’s products that they have to offer.

Chewy.com offers a lot of other great products for dogs, cats, and other pets. They also have the best customer service! (trust me, they treat their customers like family)

Treats that the whole family err fur family can enjoy

I cannot believe it is already March! February just flew on by. It seems like only yesterday, we were talking about keeping our chompers healthy during Pet Dental month and now it is almost St. Patrick’s Day. I already have my bandanna on. Some hoomans like to eat corn beef and cabbage to celebrate the holiday, I just want snacks.

This month there were lots of snacks to choose from. I wanted to go with a very limited ingredient treat this time around. So limited that it actually only has one ingredient! We, meaning I picked out Primal Beef Liver Munchies. (click on the purple link to be taken directly to the Chewy site for these treats) It contains Beef Liver. It contains zero spices or flavorings, preservatives, grains, salt, or sugar. Nothing but beef liver. Sometimes you just want a simple treat and with Primal Beef Liver Munchies, you get exactly that.

Primal treats are a very good source of protein. The bag indicates a min of  66% protein, that is a lot of protein. There is not a per treat calorie count, but the website indicates 130 calories per ounce and each bag weighs two ounces. There are a lot of treats in the bag. Mom figures under 10 calories per piece.

They are made from beef sourced in the USA, which is a total plus for us.  We prefer to buy stuff made where we live. The beef is free from antibiotics without any added hormones. That is something we really like.

The treats are bite sized and they are for cats and dogs! So my brothers can partake in some tasty goodness as well. You can see the both of us investigating the treats and seeing if it is something we might want to try. Spoiler alert, we tried and liked them!

They come in all sorts of sizes, so that the tiny ones can go to the kitties and the bigger pieces can go right into my tummy.

These treats are  freeze dried, but more importantly they are raw, so after your human gives you one or maybe ten if you are super lucky, make sure they wash their hands with soap and hot water.

Onward to the pros and cons from the three of us.

Mom says she loves that they are a single source of protein and they are good for both cats and dogs. One bag of treats can be given to all of us. She wishes that calorie count per treat was on the bag, but understands that the different sized pieces can make that determination difficult.

Icky kitty ate three of them in a row and would like them to be a little smaller. Even the small ones are a little big for his little mouth. He did not throw them back up like he does with most treats. So we know that he likes them and his sensitive tummy can handle them. (Sam kitty and Baby kitty are not fans of treats at all, so they were not included in the taste test)

I was very happy with these treats. I love raw treats. They are always super tasty. They usually contain just meat, so that is always a plus with me. I was not thrilled that I can share them with my brother. He should get his own treats!

The three of us all give paws and thumbs up. 8 paws for icky kitty and I and 2 thumbs up for mom.

Primal treats are welcome in this house, because they are quality treats and made in the USA. The raw liver munchies also come in turkey and pork. You can try all three and see which one you like best. You can see all Primal items that Chewy carries by clicking here.

Crunchy on the Outside, Beefy on the Inside

Thanksgiving is just days away and soon it will be all about the turkey, but today we talk beef! This month I decided to stick with what I knew and I know that Wellness makes some pretty good treats. We have reviewed a few of their products and have not been let down. This month was no different. I got to try out Wellness Core Grain Free Marrow Roasts. They are crunchy biscuits that have real meaty marrow inside. They are only 11 calories a piece for the Hearty Beef Recipe. The Turkey recipe is 11 calories as well.

img_1392

The marrow roasts treats are grain free, contain no by products, and list the meat protein as the first ingredient. That is very important to us. Carnivores want meat. We cannot stress enough how important it is when choosing food and treats that meat is listed first. If I wanted some veggies,  I would hit up the salad bar. It does list peas and sweet potatoes as other ingredients. I suppose that is okay since I cannot actually see any of the veggies. Down with peas! I have a huge hatred of peas, but since I cannot see them, I deal.

img_1397

As you can see the treats are not very big, so they could work for many different sized pups. I was very excited when mom held out her hand and could barely sit still while she snapped a few pictures. I wasted little time scarfing down these tasty morsels. This is probably the first time that we can recall that my treat contained marrow. I have very picky hoomans and they will not let me have just anything without researching first that it is okay for me and that the product was made in a country that has deemed acceptable to them. These treats were made right here in the U S of A.

img_1398

I am not quite sure you can see the look of intensity that is on my face. I am in full on give me my treat mode. I did indeed gobble them up like they were the last treats on earth. If I am unsure about a treat, I will drop it and lick it a few times before I pick it back up and eat it. I did not do that at all with this treat. I immediately got to chewing and swallowing and looking at mom with my best head tilt for another treat or five! I give these four paws up and hope that the Savory Turkey Recipe finds its way to my tummy in the near future.

The treats are over my 5 calorie limit because of the diet, but because I am extra cute, mom made an exception. (in reality it just means I don’t get as many treats per day because of the higher calorie count)

You can find these treats on Chewy.com as well as a lot of other great Wellness items. Check out Chewy for all your dog and feline needs.

Watch a nifty vine video here of me first trying out the treats.
