Happy Halloween! Halloween is one of moms favorite holidays next to Thanksgiving. She loves being able to create costumes and have fun scaring people. Long ago mom and her brother got super scary masks and black cloaks. They slouched over in chairs on their moms porch and waited. Spooky music played and spider webs adorned the doorway. They waited as the first victims errrr I mean kids walked up the steps to the door. As soon as they were close enough, mom and her brother sprang from the chairs and growled at the tiny humans. The kids got super scared and ran back to their parents. Some of the parents had to come up and get the candy because the kids were too scared to come back up. They had lots of fun scaring kids most of the night.
Mom and dad do not have any human kids, so the only thing she can dress up on Halloween is either me or my brofurs. Icky kitty aka Bater tolerates it enough to snap a picture or two. I just like attention. I may look super serious in my pictures, but once someone starts petting me or telling me how cute I am, then the smiles are there.
2014 Halloween I was a Land shark, I had my very own Candygram that mom made and attached on to me. That year I did not place at all in the Petco costume contest. I was pretty bummed, but that just meant we had to work harder the next year.
The next year, it was decided that mom would just make my costume. After lots of thinking, it was finally decided that I would be Harry err Lily Potter. I have issues with things touching my face. So no glasses or scar for me. I was actually named for Harry’s mum, so Lily Potter worked perfect. Mom did some thrift store, Etsy, and, fabric store, and Amazon shopping to get all the materials she needed. She found a grey sweater at the thrift store and then used felt from the fabric store to make that perfect Gryffindor sweater and scarf. She was able to find an iron on patch for the crest on the school robes.
We also had to create a scene for an Instagram contest. We created Kings Cross Station. I had my very own owl and luggage. I had everything I needed to board Hogwarts Express!
We really liked this costume. Dad said it was spot on. We got 2nd place at the in-store contest. At least we placed that time! We did not win the instagram contest. That is okay. I looked darn good and that is the important thing.
2016 was a tough one again. Mom kept wanting to make me be a cop or prison guard and the kitties be the inmates. Getting three kitties to behave is almost impossible! It was finally decided that I would be Batman. I did not even need a mask. My ears are its own mask. The Instagram contest had a rule that your human had to be in the picture too. Mom was like AHHHHHHHH. I was going to be 1960’s Batman, and icky kitty was going to be Robin. That left mom with the Penguin, The Riddler, or Catwoman. Mom said heck to the no for spandex. It was decided that she would be the Penguin. Amazon, thrift stores, Etsy and the fabric store proved to be helpful in creating the costumes. Icky kitty was made of felt, a onesie, and some fabric. Moms was created from thrift store finds, fabric, and a little spray paint. Mine was from a dog shirt, some fabric, and an iron on patch.
Then it all came together to form our non winning, but still pawsome group picture. I did win first place in the in store contest!
This year was the hardest to come up with. We thought and thought and thought. It was so hard to figure out what I should be. Then suddenly it just popped inside her head. She was like you can be a ninja turtle! I had my twitter pals vote for which one. Michelangelo won with 49% of the vote.
This was also the hardest to make. She used a doggy hoodie, some items from the hardware store, and the fabric store. I think I am the only doggy on the whole planet with a working set of wooden nunchucks! Dad helped mom make those. He is much better at power tools.
Mom made the shell and then used ribbon to make the hexagon design. She used stuffing in both the shell and the chest plate and then lots of sewing to put it all together. She tried using some velcro to keep the shell on the body, but it did not behave. She was able to use some snaps to keep the shell attached to the body. Snaps are your friend. The belt was snapped on as well.
I do not have a super cool mask, because of the whole touching my face thing. People could still totally tell that I was Michelangelo. I had my orange elbow bands, the M on my belt, and of course the nunchucks.
This year Mom did not have to be in the Instagram entry, but wanted to make a super fantastic scene, so she went as April O’Neil. Some trips to Target, the thrift store, and fabric store for some dye and poof! Her costume was done.
We think this is out best entry yet. Plus I won first place in one in store contest and second in another.
Looking back, we love all of the costumes, but Lily Potter holds a special place in our heart since it was the first one that mom made.
We hope you enjoyed the Lily costumes of years past.
What are you planning on being this year? Let me know!
